VTE_VERSION env variable

Category: device · Baseline: modern

$VTE_VERSION
The VTE_VERSION environment variable is set by terminals built on the VTE widget library — GNOME Terminal, Tilix, Terminator, Xfce Terminal, Guake, and others. Its value is a packed version number such as 6200 (meaning VTE 0.62.0), letting applications detect not just that they are running inside a VTE-based terminal but also which features the underlying widget supports. Shell integration scripts commonly check VTE_VERSION to decide whether to enable OSC 7 (working directory reporting) and other VTE-specific behaviors.
How this is testedmanual
Manual verification required — no automated probe available.

The same probe runs against headless backends (via Termless) and real terminal apps (via a daemon launched in each terminal). This lets us distinguish parser correctness from rendering correctness.
